Regional Focus: Central and Eastern Europe

Mathematics Communities, Curriculum and Teaching in the 1970s/80s, 1990s, and Today

Building on the shared historical context of Central and Eastern European countries and their rich educational traditions, a group of ambassadors from the countries in this region jointly proposed to offer valuable insights to the international community by exploring how mathematics education has evolved across three significant time periods: the 1970s/80s, the 1990s, and the present day.

Research teams from the participating countries have already been formed. These groups will collaboratively prepare a diverse range of contributions—lectures, panel discussions, poster sessions, exhibitions, e-publications, and even mathematics walks for pupils using MathCityMap.

The contributions will address various aspects of mathematics education and culture, including: Mathematics research and the influence of the New Math movement, Curriculum reforms and final school examinations, Textbooks, teacher education, and specialised schools, Mathematics competitions and the nurturing of gifted students, Popularisation of mathematics and the role of mathematical societies, Relationships between mathematicians and mathematics educators.

This collective account will shed light on how mathematics education in Central and Eastern Europe has developed—often in contrast to Western European trends—shaped by unique socio-political conditions and limited international contact during much of the 20th century. Many of these stories and insights remain underrepresented in international discourse.

As a symbolic host city, Prague will enrich this programme with activities connected to its mathematical heritage. Among them, Mathematics Walks will be organised by members of the Union of Czech Mathematicians and Physicists, offering participants an engaging exploration of the city's mathematical landmarks.

The Co-Chair of LOC, Ladislav Kvasz, is responsible for the coordination of work in this section.
